Does a Shed Base Need Rebar?

A small timber shed on a dry, well-compacted sub-base can often sit on a plain concrete pad or pre-cast slabs. However, reinforcement becomes worthwhile — and in many cases necessary — when:

  • The shed base exceeds about 3 m × 3 m (larger pours are more prone to shrinkage cracking).
  • The sub-base is soft, variable or has been recently disturbed (poor bearing capacity).
  • The structure is a workshop, store or outbuilding subject to significant point loads (machinery, racking, vehicle access).
  • The slab sits on a slope or near drainage features where differential settlement is a risk.

Adding a single mat of B500B bar or reinforcing mesh to a 100 mm shed base adds modest material cost but significantly increases resistance to cracking and long-term settlement.

Mesh vs. loose bar for a shed base

For a simple rectangular shed base, welded reinforcing mesh (standard panel sizes e.g. 6.0 × 2.3 m, B500A grade) is usually the most practical option — it arrives pre-spaced, reduces site labour and minimises waste. Loose B500B bar in 6 m lengths is worth considering if your base is an unusual shape or has multiple penetrations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size rebar should I use for a shed base?
For most domestic shed bases (up to about 4 × 4 m, light loads), Ø8–10 mm B500B at 200 mm centres both ways in a 100 mm slab is typical. Larger workshop bases or soft ground may warrant Ø10–12 mm at 150–200 mm in a 125 mm slab. Always confirm requirements with a structural engineer for commercial structures.
Can I use mesh instead of rebar for a shed base?
Yes — pre-welded B500A reinforcing mesh (e.g. Q131 or Q188 panels to DIN 488-4) is an excellent choice for rectangular shed bases. It is quick to lay, consistent in spacing and available in standard panel sizes. We supply both standard and bespoke mesh panels.
Does a small shed base need any reinforcement at all?
A very small shed (under 2 × 2 m) on a firm, stable sub-base with good drainage may not strictly require reinforcement in a 75–100 mm plain concrete pad. However, even a nominal Ø8 @ 200 c/c mat provides worthwhile crack control and costs little extra. For any base over 3 m in any direction, reinforcement is strongly recommended.
What is concrete cover for rebar in a shed base?
A minimum of 30–35 mm is typical for on-grade residential slabs in dry conditions. Use plastic spacer chairs to hold bars at the correct depth during the pour. If the slab is exposed to ground moisture or freeze-thaw cycling, increase cover to 40 mm and consider a C25/30 concrete mix.
