Why Rebar Matters in a Garage Floor Slab
A garage floor slab sits on-grade and must handle point loads from vehicle tyres (typically 2–4 t per axle for a domestic car, up to 7.5 t for a light commercial vehicle), distributed floor loads and thermal movement. Without reinforcement, thin concrete cracks across cold joints and settlement differentials. A correctly sized mat of B500B ribbed bar or reinforcing mesh limits crack width, holds the slab together after any cracking, and distributes loads more evenly to the sub-base.

Rebar vs. Mesh for a Garage Floor
Both loose bar laid as a mat and pre-welded reinforcing mesh panels are suitable for garage floor slabs. The choice depends on your project scale and available labour:
- Reinforcing mesh (DIN 488-4 Q/R type, B500A) is faster to lay on-site, consistent in spacing and preferred for large pours where speed matters.
- Loose B500B bar allows custom spacing and is easier to adapt around drainage penetrations, pits and column bases. We supply it in 6–12 m standard lengths or as cut-and-bend shapes.
Concrete cover for a garage slab
Rebar must be positioned at mid-depth or at the bottom third of the slab, with a minimum 30–40 mm cover to the underside (use plastic spacers / chairs to maintain this during the pour). For slabs in XC2/XC3 exposure class (periodic wetness from vehicle wash-down, de-icing salt), 40 mm minimum cover is advisable per Eurocode 2.
Double mat or single mat?
Most domestic garage slabs use a single mat positioned in the lower half of the slab to control shrinkage cracking and distribute load to the sub-base. A double mat (top and bottom) is generally only needed where the slab spans over a void, supports heavy racking loads anchored at top, or is thicker than 200 mm.
