B500A Reinforcing Steel
B500A rebar delivers 500 MPa minimum yield strength with normal ductility — the preferred grade for welded mesh and automated coil processing. Available from Germany with full Mill Test Certificate and export documentation.
What Is B500A Rebar?
B500A reinforcing steel is the normal-ductility grade of the European B500 family, defined under DIN 488 (Germany) and EN 10080 (European reinforcing steels). The designation breaks down as: B = reinforcing steel, 500 = 500 MPa characteristic yield strength (fyk), A = normal ductility class.
Its key mechanical parameters are: minimum yield strength fyk ≥ 500 MPa, tensile-to-yield ratio k ≥ 1.05, and uniform elongation at maximum force Agt ≥ 2.5 %. These properties make B500A well suited to applications where the reinforcement is not expected to undergo significant plastic hinging, and where the efficient production of coils and welded mesh panels is a priority.
Typical Product Forms
Because B500A is predominantly produced by cold-rolling or cold-drawing, it is most commonly supplied as:
- Reinforcing coils — diameters 6–16 mm, for feeding automated stirrup benders and mesh welding lines.
- Welded reinforcing mesh (Betonstahlmatten) — standard square or rectangular panels to DIN 488-4, produced from B500A wire.
- Straight bars — less common in B500A, but available for specific project requirements.
The hot-rolled workhorse for straight bars is B500B, while the seismic-grade variant is B500C. See our steel grades overview for a full side-by-side comparison.
B500A Mechanical & Dimensional Specifications
Key parameters per DIN 488 / EN 10080 for project specification and mill certificate verification.
| Property | B500A Value | Standard Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Characteristic yield strength fyk | ≥ 500 MPa | DIN 488 / EN 10080 |
| Tensile-to-yield ratio k = ft/fy | ≥ 1.05 | EN 1992-1-1 (Eurocode 2) |
| Uniform elongation Agt | ≥ 2.5 % | DIN 488 / EN 10080 |
| Ductility class | A (normal) | EN 1992-1-1 |
| Weldability | Yes (Ceq controlled) | DIN EN ISO 17660 |
| Surface | Ribbed (deformed) | DIN 488 |
| Common diameters (coil) | 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 mm | DIN 488 |
Weight per metre follows the formula kg/m = d²(mm) × 0.00617. For reference: 8 mm = 0.395 kg/m · 10 mm = 0.617 kg/m · 12 mm = 0.888 kg/m · 16 mm = 1.58 kg/m.
B500A vs B500B: Choosing the Right Grade
Both grades share the same 500 MPa yield floor — the differences lie in ductility and production method.
B500A — Normal Ductility
k ≥ 1.05, Agt ≥ 2.5 %. Produced primarily cold-rolled. Ideal for mesh and automated stirrup production. Use in members designed to Eurocode 2 Class A ductility.
See grade comparison →B500B — High Ductility
k ≥ 1.08, Agt ≥ 5.0 %. Hot-rolled straight bars, the general-purpose workhorse for slabs, columns, beams and retaining structures. Eurocode 2 Class B.
Explore B500B →B500C — Seismic Ductility
1.15 ≤ k < 1.35, Agt ≥ 7.5 %. For high-seismicity zones and critical structures. Eurocode 2 Class C; specified in EN 1998 (Eurocode 8).
