What Is a Standard Parallel-Thread Rebar Coupler?

A standard rebar coupler — also called an inline coupler or parallel-thread coupler — is a cylindrical sleeve machined with parallel internal threads on both ends. Both bar ends are cold-rolled or cut-threaded to matching parallel threads, then torqued into the sleeve from opposite sides until the shoulders are flush. The result is a continuous splice that develops the full tensile and compressive capacity of the bar, with no reliance on concrete bond over a lap length.

Standard (parallel-thread) couplers are the most commonly specified coupler type in European reinforced concrete construction. They are ideal wherever both bars can be rotated freely during assembly — for instance, in column-to-column lap zones, wall starter bars, and foundation pile cages. Design Standard Compliance

Standard parallel-thread couplers for European structural applications must be demonstrated to satisfy the splice performance requirements of EN 1992-1-1 (Eurocode 2), which governs the design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Under Eurocode 2, a mechanical coupler must develop at least the specified characteristic tensile strength of the bar being spliced, with defined limits on slip and elongation at failure.

The rebar itself conforms to DIN 488 (the German national reinforcing steel standard) and EN 10080 (European harmonised standard for steel for reinforcement). Our B500B bars carry characteristic yield strength fyk = 500 MPa, ductility class B (k ≥ 1.08, Agt ≥ 5.0%). Mill Test Certificates are issued to EN 10204 Type 3.1 by the producing mill’s inspector.

  • Fully reversible joint — bars can be unscrewed for element repositioning before final pour, enabling phased construction without bar loss.

Frequently Asked Questions — Standard Rebar Couplers

What is the difference between a parallel-thread and a taper-thread coupler?
A parallel-thread coupler uses a constant-pitch thread machined to a tight tolerance. Both bar ends are threaded to matching dimensions and screwed into the sleeve symmetrically. A taper-thread coupler uses a conical thread that wedges on contact — it can be tightened with less torque but may offer slightly lower slip resistance under cyclic load. For standard structural concrete in Europe, both types are used; the choice is often governed by the engineer’s specification or the available threading equipment on site.
Can standard couplers be used for seismic zones requiring B500C ductility?
Yes, provided the coupler system has been tested with B500C bars (k-ratio 1.15–1.35, Agt ≥ 7.5%) and the test report demonstrates the coupler develops the actual bar tensile strength rather than just the characteristic value. Eurocode 8 and many national annexes impose additional coupler qualification requirements for DCM and DCH ductility classes. Always confirm the coupler’s qualification test report scope with your structural engineer before specifying.
What documentation do you supply with coupler orders?
Each coupler shipment is accompanied by: (1) the coupler manufacturer’s material certificate and dimension report; (2) the qualification test report demonstrating Eurocode 2 performance; (3) the Mill Test Certificate (EN 10204 Type 3.1) for the rebar if supplied together; and (4) a Certificate of Origin and export packing list. Additional documentation such as CE Declaration of Performance or project-specific ITPs can be discussed at quotation stage.
How are the bars threaded — at the factory or on site?
Threading can be carried out either in our fabrication facility (prefabricated bars shipped with threads already cut and couplers pre-fitted on one end) or on site using mobile threading machines. For export orders, factory-threading is generally preferred to simplify on-site logistics. On-site threading requires trained operatives and calibrated equipment to meet the thread-form tolerances required by the coupler system.
Are standard couplers compatible with any rebar supplier’s bars?
In principle, a parallel-thread coupler machined to a defined thread form (e.g. ISO metric thread M-series) will accept any bar threaded to the same specification. However, coupler system qualification tests are performed on specific bar grades and diameters. It is important that the bar’s rib geometry does not interfere with the thread-rolling process and that the finished thread meets the coupler supplier’s tolerance requirements. When we supply complete systems (bar + coupler), compatibility is assured.
