What Is TMT Rebar?

TMT stands for Thermo-Mechanically Treated — the process behind modern high-strength, ductile rebar.

How TMT rebar is made

Hot-rolled bar is rapidly quenched on the surface then allowed to self-temper from the hot core. This gives a tough, high-strength outer ring and a soft, ductile core — strength and bendability in one bar.

Why it matters

  • High yield (B500B = 500 MPa) with good ductility for seismic zones.
  • Good weldability (controlled carbon equivalent).
  • Excellent bond thanks to rolled ribs.

We supply TMT rebar to BS 4449 B500B, ASTM A615/A706 and ISO 6935, mill-certified. Compare grades: B500B vs Grade 60.

Frequently asked questions

What does TMT stand for?

Thermo-Mechanically Treated — a quench-and-self-temper process that gives a hard surface and ductile core.

Is TMT rebar weldable?

Yes, within its controlled carbon equivalent — B500B and A706 are suited to site welding.

Why is TMT rebar stronger?

The quenched martensitic surface raises strength while the tempered core keeps ductility — better than older cold-twisted bar.
