Is B500B the Same as Grade 500?

B500B and “Grade 500” share the same 500 MPa minimum yield strength — but B500B is a precisely defined designation under EN 10080 that also specifies ductility class, chemistry, and testing regime. Here is what procurement engineers need to know.

What “Grade 500” Actually Means

The term “Grade 500” appears in multiple national standards — AS/NZS 4671 (Australia/New Zealand), BS 4449 (UK), and informally in specifications derived from older ISO references. In all cases the number 500 refers to the characteristic yield strength: a minimum of 500 MPa (megapascals), equivalent to approximately 72,500 psi.

However, “Grade 500” on its own says nothing about ductility, weldability, chemical composition limits, or the test method used to verify those properties. Different standards attach different sub-designations to control these additional parameters. This is precisely where B500B enters the picture.

The B500B Designation Under EN 10080 and DIN 488

B500B is the high-ductility reinforcing steel grade defined by the European standard EN 10080 and its German transposition DIN 488. The designation decodes as follows:

  • B — Betonstahl (reinforcing steel for concrete)
  • 500 — Characteristic yield strength Re,k = 500 MPa
  • B — Ductility Class B (high ductility)

Ductility Class B requires a strain-hardening ratio k = (Rm/Re) ≥ 1.08 and a total elongation at maximum force Agt ≥ 5.0 %. These figures are not optional extras — they are mandatory minimum values verified by the mill and reported on the EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate.

Why Ductility Class Matters for Structural Design

Eurocode 2 (EN 1992-1-1) links the permitted redistribution of moments and the use of simplified analysis rules directly to the ductility class of the reinforcement. Structures designed to allow moment redistribution or plastic hinge formation must use at least Class B steel. Specifying a bar by yield strength alone, without a ductility class, can therefore undermine the structural model assumed by the design engineer.

For seismic applications or critical ductile details, Class C (B500C: k ≥ 1.15 and ≤ 1.35, Agt ≥ 7.5 %) is required. Class A (B500A: k ≥ 1.05, Agt ≥ 2.5 %) is adequate for lightly stressed mesh and stirrups but not for primary moment-resisting elements in Class B or C seismic zones.

Practical Procurement Guidance

When a project specification calls for “Grade 500 rebar” without further qualification, procurement teams should clarify which sub-standard is intended before placing orders across borders. German or EU-sourced rebar will carry the B500B designation and full EN 10080 / DIN 488 documentation. Verify the following on the Mill Test Certificate:

  • Grade designation: B500B (not merely “500 N/mm²”)
  • k value (Rm/Re) ≥ 1.08 reported per heat or lot
  • Agt ≥ 5.0 % per EN ISO 6892-1
  • Chemical composition: C ≤ 0.22 %, P ≤ 0.050 %, S ≤ 0.050 %, carbon equivalent Ceq per DIN 488
  • Certificate type: EN 10204 3.1 (third-party witnessed inspection)

Is B500B the same as Grade 500B in the UK (BS 4449)?
The designations are similar but not identical. BS 4449:2005+A3:2016 Grade B500B aligns closely with EN 10080 B500B and was specifically harmonised for European compatibility. The yield strength (500 MPa) and ductility requirements (k ≥ 1.08, Agt ≥ 5 %) are equivalent, but BS 4449 carries additional UK-specific chemical limits and factory production control requirements. For export projects where BS 4449 is specified, obtain explicit confirmation from the project engineer that EN 10080 B500B is an acceptable equivalent.
Can B500B replace Grade 60 rebar used in the United States?
Grade 60 (ASTM A615 or A706) specifies a minimum yield of 60 ksi (≈ 414 MPa), which is lower than B500B’s 500 MPa. B500B therefore exceeds the yield requirement of Grade 60. However, direct substitution requires engineering sign-off because design codes (ACI 318), bar marking systems, diameter series (inch vs metric), and lap-splice / development length tables differ between the two standards. B500B is not a drop-in replacement without structural re-analysis.
Does a Mill Test Certificate showing “500 N/mm²” prove the steel is B500B?
No. A yield strength result of 500 N/mm² confirms the strength criterion is met but does not confirm the grade. A valid B500B MTC must also report the strain-hardening ratio k (Rm/Re) ≥ 1.08, elongation at maximum force Agt ≥ 5.0 %, and chemical composition in accordance with DIN 488 or EN 10080. Insist on a full EN 10204 3.1 certificate that names the grade explicitly as B500B.
Is B500C better than B500B, and when should it be specified?
B500C (k ≥ 1.15–1.35, Agt ≥ 7.5 %) offers higher ductility and is required by Eurocode 8 for primary seismic elements in medium- and high-ductility class structures (DCM and DCH). For standard non-seismic construction in Europe, B500B is the prevalent and fully adequate choice. B500C carries a cost premium and is typically reserved for projects in earthquake-prone regions or where the structural design explicitly calls for Class C ductility.
Do German mills produce both B500A and B500B?
Yes. B500A (k ≥ 1.05, Agt ≥ 2.5 %) is produced in smaller diameters — typically 6–16 mm — and is commonly supplied as rebar coil for automated stirrup-bending and mesh-welding machines. B500B is the standard grade for hot-rolled straight bars and is the default specification for structural reinforcement across Germany and most EU member states. Both grades are documented under DIN 488 and carry EN 10204 3.1 MTCs.
