Is B500B the Same as Grade 500?
B500B and “Grade 500” share the same 500 MPa minimum yield strength — but B500B is a precisely defined designation under EN 10080 that also specifies ductility class, chemistry, and testing regime. Here is what procurement engineers need to know.
What “Grade 500” Actually Means
The term “Grade 500” appears in multiple national standards — AS/NZS 4671 (Australia/New Zealand), BS 4449 (UK), and informally in specifications derived from older ISO references. In all cases the number 500 refers to the characteristic yield strength: a minimum of 500 MPa (megapascals), equivalent to approximately 72,500 psi.
However, “Grade 500” on its own says nothing about ductility, weldability, chemical composition limits, or the test method used to verify those properties. Different standards attach different sub-designations to control these additional parameters. This is precisely where B500B enters the picture.
The B500B Designation Under EN 10080 and DIN 488
B500B is the high-ductility reinforcing steel grade defined by the European standard EN 10080 and its German transposition DIN 488. The designation decodes as follows:
- B — Betonstahl (reinforcing steel for concrete)
- 500 — Characteristic yield strength Re,k = 500 MPa
- B — Ductility Class B (high ductility)
Ductility Class B requires a strain-hardening ratio k = (Rm/Re) ≥ 1.08 and a total elongation at maximum force Agt ≥ 5.0 %. These figures are not optional extras — they are mandatory minimum values verified by the mill and reported on the EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate.

Why Ductility Class Matters for Structural Design
Eurocode 2 (EN 1992-1-1) links the permitted redistribution of moments and the use of simplified analysis rules directly to the ductility class of the reinforcement. Structures designed to allow moment redistribution or plastic hinge formation must use at least Class B steel. Specifying a bar by yield strength alone, without a ductility class, can therefore undermine the structural model assumed by the design engineer.
For seismic applications or critical ductile details, Class C (B500C: k ≥ 1.15 and ≤ 1.35, Agt ≥ 7.5 %) is required. Class A (B500A: k ≥ 1.05, Agt ≥ 2.5 %) is adequate for lightly stressed mesh and stirrups but not for primary moment-resisting elements in Class B or C seismic zones.
Practical Procurement Guidance
When a project specification calls for “Grade 500 rebar” without further qualification, procurement teams should clarify which sub-standard is intended before placing orders across borders. German or EU-sourced rebar will carry the B500B designation and full EN 10080 / DIN 488 documentation. Verify the following on the Mill Test Certificate:
- Grade designation: B500B (not merely “500 N/mm²”)
- k value (Rm/Re) ≥ 1.08 reported per heat or lot
- Agt ≥ 5.0 % per EN ISO 6892-1
- Chemical composition: C ≤ 0.22 %, P ≤ 0.050 %, S ≤ 0.050 %, carbon equivalent Ceq per DIN 488
- Certificate type: EN 10204 3.1 (third-party witnessed inspection)
