How to Read the Mechanical Properties Section

The mechanical properties block is the core of any rebar MTC. For B500B (the most widely traded grade for export), the minimum requirements under DIN 488 are:

  • Characteristic yield strength (Re): ≥ 500 MPa
  • Tensile-to-yield ratio (k = Rm/Re): ≥ 1.08
  • Total elongation at maximum force (Agt): ≥ 5.0%

For B500C (seismic/high-ductility grade), the limits are tighter: k must fall in the range 1.15 ≤ k < 1.35 and Agt ≥ 7.5%. If your project engineer specifies B500C, verify that the MTC explicitly references this sub-grade — a standard B500B certificate is not a substitute.

Chemical Composition and Weldability

When buying from a German mill or distributor, you should receive:

  • EN 10204 3.1 Inspection Certificate (MTC)
  • CE Declaration of Performance (DoP) referencing EN 10080

A 3.1 certificate is authorised by the manufacturer’s own nominated representative and is the standard for structural rebar. A 3.2 certificate involves an independent third-party inspector (e.g. Bureau Veritas, SGS, TÜV) witnessing the tests. Projects with stringent QA requirements — seismic structures, public infrastructure — may specify 3.2. Confirm with your structural engineer which level is required before placing your order.
Can I request a rebar mill certificate before shipment?
Yes. Reputable exporters provide the MTC as a pre-shipment document alongside the commercial invoice and packing list. This allows your QA team to review mechanical and chemical data before the material ships. For large orders, request a draft MTC at the time of order confirmation to verify the heat numbers will be available.
What does Agt mean on a rebar certificate and why does it matter?
Agt is the total elongation at maximum force — a ductility measure. For B500B rebar it must be ≥ 5.0% and for B500C ≥ 7.5%. Low Agt indicates brittle steel that may fracture under seismic or impact loading rather than bending plastically. Do German rebar MTCs include the carbon equivalent (Ceq)?
