Ductility classes (Europe)

BS 4449 / EN 10080 split 500 MPa steel into Class A, B and C by ductility (Rm/Re ratio and elongation). Class B (Rm/Re ≥ 1.08) is the common structural choice; Class C is for high-seismic design.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between B500A, B and C?

All have 500 MPa yield; the letter is the ductility class — A (lowest) to C (highest, for seismic). Class B is the usual structural grade.

Is Grade 60 the same as B500B?

Close but not identical — Grade 60 is 420 MPa (ASTM), B500B is 500 MPa (BS/EN). Substitution needs engineer approval.

Which grade is weldable?

Specify ASTM A706 (controlled chemistry) or B500B within its carbon-equivalent limit for site welding.
