How to Choose a Rebar Grade

Picking the right reinforcement grade comes down to the design code, ductility demand and whether you need to weld.

Step 1 — follow the design code

Eurocode/BS → B500B (500 MPa). ACI/US → Grade 60 (420 MPa). Confirm what the drawings and local authority specify.

Step 2 — ductility class

Seismic or redistribution → Class B or C (BS 4449) for guaranteed Rm/Re and elongation. General work → Class B.

Step 3 — weldability

If site welding is required, specify ASTM A706 (low-alloy) or B500B within its carbon-equivalent limit rather than plain A615.

Step 4 — environment

Aggressive/marine → consider epoxy, GFRP or galvanized.
