What Is Eurocode 2?

Design Approach: Limit States

Eurocode 2, like all Eurocodes, uses a limit state design framework:

  • Ultimate Limit State (ULS) — checks structural safety: flexure, shear, torsion, axial load, stability, punching, and fatigue. Design forces are factored up; material strengths are divided by partial factors (γs = 1.15 for steel in ULS).
  • Serviceability Limit State (SLS) — checks performance in use: deflection, crack width, and stress limits. Partial factors are generally 1.0 at SLS.

National Annexes and Local Variations
