Hollowcore Slabs — System Overview
Hollowcore slabs (Hohldeckenplatten or Spannbetonhohldielen) are prestressed precast concrete floor elements with continuous longitudinal voids that reduce self-weight while maintaining structural depth. Standard units are 1 200 mm wide with depths ranging from 150 mm to 500 mm, spanning up to 16 m or more in long-span configurations. They are the dominant floor system in multi-storey residential, commercial, warehouse and carpark construction across Europe and many export markets.
While the prestressing strands within the hollowcore unit itself are supplied by the precast manufacturer, the edge and tie reinforcement placed in the grouted joints, in-situ toppings and structural ring beams requires conventional B500B reinforcing steel — the procurement focus of this page.
Edge and Tie Reinforcement — Where Rebar Is Required
Conventional reinforcing steel is required at four principal locations in a hollowcore floor system:
- Longitudinal joint fill reinforcement: Small-diameter B500B bars (typically Ø 8–12 mm) placed in the grouted keyway joints between adjacent units to provide diaphragm continuity and resist splitting forces.
- Transverse tie bars: B500B tie bars cast into the support beam or wall bearing zone, looped or hooked into the joint grout, providing horizontal tie forces to EC2 clause 9.10 robustness requirements. Typical diameter Ø 10–16 mm at spacing specified by the structural engineer.
- In-situ structural topping: Where a composite or non-composite topping (typically 50–80 mm) is cast over the units, B500B welded mesh (Q-type to DIN 488-4) is placed within the topping to control shrinkage cracking and, in composite designs, to contribute to the composite section capacity.
- Ring beam and edge beam reinforcement: Perimeter beams and ring beams at floor level carry the horizontal tie force requirements of EC2 and provide diaphragm action for lateral load distribution. These are typically reinforced with B500B bars Ø 12–32 mm.

Eurocode 2 Design Considerations
Hollowcore floor systems are designed to EN 1992-1-1 (Eurocode 2) and EN 1168 (the European precast hollowcore product standard). Key reinforcement design requirements include:
- Horizontal tie forces (EC2 clause 9.10): Peripheral ties, internal ties and column/wall ties must each carry the greater of the calculated tie force or the minimum values (typically 75 kN for peripheral ties in ordinary structures). B500B Ø 12–16 mm bars at designed spacing are the standard solution.
- Diaphragm action: The grouted longitudinal joints between hollowcore units must transfer in-plane shear. Joint bars placed in the keyways and tied at their ends into the support zone ensure shear transfer at the joint interface per EC2 clause 10.9.3.
- Composite topping: Where a structural topping is specified, the B500B mesh in the topping contributes to the composite section under EC2 clause 10.9.4. The mesh must be anchored beyond the support and satisfy minimum lap lengths.
- Fire resistance: Concrete cover to tie bars and topping mesh is governed by EC2 EN 1992-1-2 fire exposure tables. For standard REI 60 / REI 90 floor ratings, minimum cover is typically 25–35 mm to the tie bar.
- Seismic detailing: In seismic zones designed to Eurocode 8, additional ductile detailing may be required for the ring beam and tie system. B500B (Class B, k ≥ 1.08, Agt ≥ 5.0 %) satisfies DCM (Ductility Class Medium) requirements under EC8.
