A raft foundation (mat foundation) transfers building loads over a large area of ground, distributing column, wall and core loads to reduce bearing pressure to an acceptable level. Correct reinforcement of the raft is critical: it must handle bending moments both sagging (between columns) and hogging (over columns and walls), shear forces, and — in heavier structures — punching shear around column heads. Steel Rebar Germany supplies the full reinforcement package: B500B hot-rolled bar for main mats, reinforcing mesh panels for standard raft zones, cut-and-bend bars for edge trimming and punching shear perimeters, and mechanical couplers where column starter bars or core wall starters must be integrated.

Raft thickness varies widely — 300 mm for lightly loaded residential to 2500 mm or more for heavy industrial or high-rise structures. Reinforcement typically consists of a top mat and a bottom mat in orthogonal layers, with bar spacings of 150–200 mm in standard zones tightened to 100–125 mm in heavily loaded areas. Bar diameters in the main mats typically range from 12 mm to 32 mm depending on design moments.

Bottom Mat, Top Mat and Edge Reinforcement

The bottom mat is placed on concrete cover spacers (DBV-type chairs, typically 50–75 mm cover to the soffit) and resists sagging moments between column grid points. The top mat resists hogging moments at column and wall positions. Edge beams or thickened perimeter strips require additional longitudinal bars and closed links. U-bars at slab edges provide continuity between top and bottom steel at the perimeter.

Punching Shear Reinforcement

Around heavily loaded columns, punching shear is a critical design consideration to EN 1992-1-1 clause 6.4. Punching reinforcement typically consists of discrete closed links or headed stud rails (shear studs) arranged in concentric perimeters at 0.75d spacing within the critical perimeter. Concrete Cover and Spacer Requirements for Rafts

Eurocode 2 clause 4.4 and its national annexes specify minimum concrete cover for durability. For a raft foundation cast against blinding concrete, the minimum cover cnom is typically 50 mm (Exposure Class XC2 / XC3 depending on ground conditions). Where the concrete is cast directly against the ground without blinding, minimum cover is 70–75 mm. Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use loose bar or welded mesh for a raft foundation?
Both are viable. Welded mesh (Q/R-type to DIN 488-4) is efficient in standard-load raft areas where the standard panel geometry matches the design spacing. Loose B500B bar is necessary in heavily reinforced zones (column heads, punching perimeters, edge beams) where custom spacings and larger diameters are required. Many raft projects use mesh in the field zones and loose bar in the column strips.
What concrete cover is required for raft foundation reinforcement?
To EN 1992-1-1 and EN 206, the minimum cover depends on exposure class and design service life. Typical values: 50 mm where cast on blinding (XC2), 75 mm where cast directly on the ground. The national annex for the country of construction governs. We supply DBV-type spacers to achieve the specified cover on both top and bottom mats.
Can you supply column starter bars or cast-in couplers for raft foundations?
Yes. We supply B500B starter bars cut to length, with mechanical couplers pre-fitted where specified. Couplers (dia 12–40 mm, parallel-thread or taper-thread) allow columns to be reinforced and spliced after the raft pour, reducing congestion and improving concrete compaction quality in the column zone.
How are large raft reinforcement orders packed for export?
Straight bar and mesh are packed in seaworthy bundles of approximately 2 tonnes, strapped and labelled with heat number and MTC reference. Shipment is by 20ft or 40ft container (standard bar) or break-bulk (longer bars / large mesh panels). Full export documentation including EN 10204 3.1 MTC, Certificate of Origin and CE/DoP is provided.
What bar diameters are available for raft mat reinforcement?
B500B hot-rolled bar is available in diameters 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, 25, 28, 32 and 40 mm. Standard stock length is 12 m; cut-to-length is available. Weight per metre: 8 mm = 0.395 kg/m, 12 mm = 0.888 kg/m, 16 mm = 1.58 kg/m, 20 mm = 2.47 kg/m, 25 mm = 3.85 kg/m, 32 mm = 6.31 kg/m.
