The core difference
B500B (EN/DIN) has 500 N/mm² characteristic yield; Grade 60 (ASTM A615) has 60,000 psi ≈ 420 N/mm². So B500B is about 19% stronger — meaning less steel area for the same force. That’s why European designs default to 500-class and much of the Gulf/Americas specify Grade 60 (mirrored by the B420B family).
Can you substitute one for the other?
Substituting B500B where Grade 60 is specified is often acceptable with engineer approval — it’s stronger and at least as ductile. Going the other way (Grade 60 where B500B is specified) usually is not, because the design relied on the higher yield. Seismic designs are the exception: they may depend on the yield cap of 420-class steel, so any swap needs a design check.
