What BS 4449 covers
BS 4449:2005+A3:2016 is the British/European standard for weldable ribbed reinforcing steel, harmonised with EN 10080. It defines Grade 500 bar in three ductility classes — B500A, B500B, B500C — all with 500 N/mm² characteristic yield, differing in ductility.
The three ductility classes
B500A: lowest ductility (Agt ≥ 2.5%), typically small-diameter and cold-worked/coil — fine for slabs and mesh. B500B: the general-purpose grade (Agt ≥ 5.0%, yield ratio ≥ 1.08) — the default for beams, columns and most structures. B500C: high ductility (Agt ≥ 7.5%, yield ratio 1.15–1.35) — for seismic and high-demand design where the bar must yield and redistribute before failure.
Certification and the CARES mark
Compliance is proven by an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate and, in the UK, third-party approval such as UK CARES. The certificate ties chemistry, tensile results and bend tests to the heat number — your traceability chain. We supply BS 4449 B500A/B/C with full 3.1 certification and can dual-certify to ASTM A615 where a project spans specs.

What is the difference between B500B and B500C?
Both are 500 MPa; B500C has higher ductility (Agt ≥7.5% and a capped yield ratio) for seismic and high-demand design.
