What GFRP rebar is
Glass-fibre-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) bar is glass fibres in a resin matrix — non-metallic, so it cannot corrode. It is about a quarter the weight of steel, non-conductive and non-magnetic. Those properties make it attractive for splash zones, MRI rooms, tunnel soft-eyes, and chloride-soaked marine slabs.
Where GFRP wins — and where it doesn’t
Wins: zero corrosion, light handling, electromagnetic transparency. Limits: GFRP is strong in tension but has no yield plateau — it fails brittly, so it can’t be used where ductility and moment redistribution are relied on. Its low elastic modulus (~a quarter of steel) means larger deflections and crack widths, so designs are often serviceability-governed. It also can’t be bent on site (bends are factory-formed).
The honest verdict
Steel B500B remains the default for 95% of structures: ductile, weldable, code-mature and economical. GFRP is a targeted tool for corrosion-critical or EM-sensitive elements. Many projects use both — steel for the primary frame, GFRP for the exposed deck or barrier. Is GFRP rebar stronger than steel?
Higher tensile strength per weight, but it lacks steel’s ductility (no yield) and has a much lower stiffness, so it deflects and cracks more.
Can GFRP rebar be welded or bent on site?
No — it can’t be welded and bends must be made in the factory before curing.
Why still use steel rebar?
Ductility, weldability, mature codes and cost. Steel is the safe default; GFRP suits specific corrosion/EM cases.
