What steel fibers do
Steel fibers — short hooked-end or crimped wires (typically 30–60 mm long) — are mixed into concrete to distribute reinforcement in three dimensions. They control cracking, add post-crack toughness and boost fatigue and impact resistance. Common in slabs-on-grade, industrial floors, shotcrete, tunnel linings and precast.
Fibers vs mesh and rebar
For flat slabs-on-grade, steel fiber dosage can replace crack-control mesh entirely — no fixing, no lapping, faster pours. But fibers don’t replace structural bar where bending governs (suspended slabs, beams, columns): there, they complement rebar by controlling micro-cracks. The design is toughness-based (residual flexural strength classes per EN 14651).
Dosage and supply
Typical dosages run 15–45 kg/m³ depending on the duty. Fibers ship glued into dissolvable strips for even mixing. Many industrial floors use fiber for crack control plus welded mesh or bar at edges and columns. We supply reinforcement across the system — tell us the slab spec and we advise fiber, mesh or a hybrid.
