What a gabion is
A gabion is a wire-mesh cage filled with rock, used for retaining walls, erosion control, riverbank protection and architectural facades. The mesh — welded or double-twist hexagonal — holds the stone as a flexible, permeable, gravity structure that drains freely and tolerates ground movement without cracking like concrete.
Welded vs woven gabions
Welded mesh gabions give crisp lines and a rigid box — favoured for architectural walls and where appearance matters. Double-twist hexagonal (woven) gabions are more flexible and forgiving of settlement — favoured for civil and hydraulic works. Wire is heavily galvanized (or Galfan/PVC-coated) for a long service life in wet exposure.
Sizing and mesh spec
Standard baskets are 1–2 m long, 0.5–1 m high, filled with 100–200 mm clean hard stone. Key specs: wire diameter, coating (Zn or Zn-Al + PVC), mesh aperture and panel gauge. We supply gabion mesh and the wider woven wire mesh range with certified wire and coating for civil and landscape projects.
