Reinforcing the ground itself
Rock bolts and soil nails stabilise slopes, excavations and tunnels by putting steel into the ground so it acts as a reinforced mass. Soil nails are passive (mobilise as the ground moves); rock bolts can be passive or tensioned. Both rely on high-strength bar bonded in a grouted hole with a face plate.
The bar systems used
Continuous thread bar (grade 500/550, Ø20–40 mm) is the workhorse — couplable, cut anywhere, anchored by a nut and plate. Self-drilling hollow bar suits collapsing soils where you drill, grout and reinforce in one pass. Corrosion protection scales with design life — galvanizing, sheathing or double corrosion protection for permanent works.
