This geological reality shapes every aspect of structural design in the country: the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) mandates compliance with NZS 1170.5 (Structural Design Actions — Earthquake) for most structures, and reinforcing steel must meet the demanding seismic ductility requirements of AS/NZS 4671.

The key grade for New Zealand seismic design is Grade 500E — 500 MPa minimum yield, Agt ≥ 10.0% (Class E, enhanced seismic ductility), k ≥ 1.15. This high elongation requirement distinguishes 500E from standard 500N rebar and makes it mandatory for primary structural elements in ductile and limited-ductile moment-resisting frames, shear walls, and coupled-wall systems throughout most of New Zealand’s urban areas.

Our standard B500B grade (EN 10080, Agt ≥ 5.0%) is technically comparable to AS/NZS 4671 Grade 500N. For 500E seismic applications, our B500C grade (Agt ≥ 7.5%, 1.15 ≤ k < 1.35) is the closest EN 10080 equivalent, though its Agt falls short of the 500E ≥ 10.0% requirement — structural engineers must assess acceptability for specific ductility demands. No AS/NZS Standards Mark licencing is claimed for any of our products. Why is Grade 500E mandatory in New Zealand and not just 500N?
New Zealand’s seismic design philosophy requires reinforcing steel to sustain large inelastic deformations without fracturing — this is the “ductile” behaviour that allows structures to absorb earthquake energy. Grade 500E (Agt ≥ 10.0%, Class E) provides this enhanced elongation capacity, whereas 500N (Agt ≥ 5.0%) is only suitable for nominally ductile or non-ductile structures in low seismic-demand situations. NZS 3101 (Concrete Structures Standard) and NZS 1170.5 together specify where 500E is required. Most primary structural elements in Seismic Design Categories C and above require 500E.
Can EN 10080 B500C replace AS/NZS 4671 Grade 500E in New Zealand projects?
B500C (Agt ≥ 7.5%, 1.15 ≤ k < 1.35) does not fully meet the 500E Agt ≥ 10.0% requirement. Whether it is acceptable depends on the specific structural application, design ductility demand, and the licensed building practitioner’s assessment. In some lower-ductility applications or where alternative solutions are accepted by the building consent authority, it may be considered. We do not claim 500E compliance for B500C. Always consult your structural engineer and building consent authority before specifying imported rebar for seismic structural applications.
What is the transit time for rebar from Germany to New Zealand?

Are there biosecurity restrictions on steel rebar imports into New Zealand?
Steel rebar itself is not a biosecurity risk. However, packing materials including timber dunnage, wooden pallets, and packing crates must comply with ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) — timber must be heat-treated and marked accordingly. We use compliant packing materials and document this on packing lists. Biosecurity inspection and clearance by MPI may add a day or two at the port. Can mechanical couplers help with seismic reinforcement detailing in New Zealand?
Yes — mechanical couplers (parallel-thread type) are widely used in New Zealand seismic design to achieve positive mechanical splices rather than lap splices, which are restricted in plastic hinge zones by NZS 3101.
