Reinforced concrete retaining walls resist earth pressure and surcharge loading through structural bending and shear. The three main types — cantilever, counterfort and basement perimeter walls — each have distinct reinforcement layouts, but all rely on high-ductility B500B deformed bar to DIN 488 / EN 10080. Steel Rebar Germany supplies the complete reinforcement package: vertical bars for the stem, horizontal distribution bars, base slab (footing) reinforcement, starter bars at construction joints, and closed links for shear and crack control.

Cantilever walls are the most common form for retained heights up to approximately 7–8 m. The stem acts as a vertical cantilever fixed at the base; the principal reinforcement is therefore vertical bars on the retained (tension) face, with horizontal bars as distribution steel at prescribed spacing. Counterfort walls are used for greater heights, with the counterforts acting as T-beam ribs behind the stem. Base slab reinforcement must resist both the upward soil reaction and the self-weight and loading of the soil above the toe and heel.

Vertical, Horizontal and Starter Bar Arrangement

Vertical main bars on the tension face of a cantilever stem are typically 12–25 mm dia at 100–200 mm centres. Horizontal distribution bars (minimum 20 % of main steel area per EN 1992-1-1) are typically 10–16 mm dia at 150–200 mm. Bars on the compression face are minimum 25 % of the tension face steel. Starter bars at the wall/footing construction joint are typically the same diameter as the vertical bars, with lap lengths per EC2 clause 8.7 (generally 45–60 bar diameters). Mechanical couplers can replace laps at construction joints to eliminate congestion.

Design Standards and Concrete Cover

Retaining wall reinforcement design follows EN 1992-1-1 (Eurocode 2) for the structural concrete elements, combined with EN 1997-1 (Eurocode 7) for geotechnical design of the retained height and foundation bearing. Key reinforcement detailing requirements under EC2 include:

  • Minimum horizontal reinforcement ≥ 25 % of vertical reinforcement or 0.001 Ac, whichever is greater.
  • Lap lengths for B500B in tension zones: typically 1.4 × basic anchorage length (≈ 45–60 bar diameters depending on cover and bar spacing).
  • Concrete cover to retaining wall stems exposed to soil: minimum cnom = 40–50 mm for XC2/XD1 exposure class.
  • Crack width limits: typically wmax = 0.3 mm for reinforced concrete retaining walls (water-retaining walls may require 0.2 mm).

What rebar grade is specified for retaining walls to Eurocode 2?
B500B is the standard grade — yield strength ≥ 500 MPa, high ductility (k ≥ 1.08, Agt ≥ 5.0 %). It is equivalent to the former German BSt 500 S and complies with DIN 488 and EN 10080. B500A (normal ductility) can be used for distribution bars where the design does not require high ductility class B.
How do I specify starter bars for construction joints in retaining walls?
Starter bars are typically the same diameter and spacing as the main vertical bars. Lap length is calculated to EC2 clause 8.7, commonly 45–60 bar diameters in tension zones. Alternatively, mechanical couplers (dia 12–40 mm) are cast into the kicker pour and the wall bars are coupled on, eliminating the lap length and reducing congestion.
Can welded mesh be used for retaining wall faces?
Yes, for walls with standard geometry and moderate reinforcement ratios. Standard Q/R-type mesh panels to DIN 488-4 can be lapped and fixed in the formwork. However, for heavily reinforced walls (large diameters, tight spacings) or walls with complex geometry, individual cut bars offer more flexibility and are often preferred.
What concrete cover is required for retaining wall reinforcement?
For stems exposed to soil (Exposure Class XC2 or XD1 depending on groundwater conditions): typically cnom = 40–50 mm. For basement walls exposed to water pressure or de-icing salts, higher cover (50–60 mm) and potentially higher concrete class may be required. National annex values apply.
