Tunnel and underground structure reinforcement is among the most technically demanding applications for reinforcing steel. Concrete linings must withstand ground loads (earth and water pressure), temperature cycling, construction loads from TBM (tunnel boring machine) thrust jacks, and — in many regions — seismic forces. Three principal structural elements are reinforced in tunnel construction: the segmental or cast-in-situ primary lining (invert, walls, crown), the secondary cast-in-situ inner lining, and cross-passage connection structures. Each element has specific reinforcement requirements driven by structural analysis to EN 1992-1-1 and project-specific geotechnical and durability requirements.
Tunnel Lining Reinforcement — Bars, Mesh and Couplers
For cast-in-situ tunnel linings constructed by NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) or conventional methods, reinforcement is placed in the annular space between the excavation face and the waterproofing membrane. Both inner and outer circumferential bars (hoop bars) and longitudinal bars (along the tunnel axis) are required. Typical bar diameters are 12–25 mm at spacings of 100–200 mm in both directions. Where construction joints between lining pours are specified, mechanical couplers (dia 12–40 mm) are cast in to permit the reinforcing cage of the next pour to be connected without laps in the confined space of the tunnel.

Durability and Cover Requirements for Underground Structures
Underground structures are typically exposed to Exposure Class XC2–XC4 (concrete permanently wet or exposed to water) and XD1–XD3 (de-icing salt in road tunnels) per EN 206 / EN 1992-1-1 Annex E. This drives cover requirements to a minimum cnom of 45–60 mm to the outer reinforcement layer, and concrete class C30/37 or higher. The B500B grade’s high ductility (Agt ≥ 5.0 %) is also beneficial in areas of potential seismic activity, where ductility class B reinforcement is specified.
