The meaning of TMT

TMT stands for Thermo-Mechanically Treated — a rolling process where hot rebar is quenched with high-pressure water immediately after the final rolling pass, then air-cooled. The result is a bar with a hard, tough martensitic rim and a soft, ductile ferrite-pearlite core. That combination gives TMT rebar its signature mix of high yield strength and high elongation — strength where you need it, ductility where the structure needs to bend before it breaks.

In European terms, TMT-route bar is typically supplied to B500B (DIN 488 / EN 10080); in ASTM markets to Grade 60 (A615). The process, not the grade name, is what the word ‘TMT’ describes.

Why TMT beats older rebar types

Before TMT, high-strength bar was made by cold-twisting (CTD/Tor-steel), which raised strength but destroyed ductility and left residual stress that invited corrosion. TMT gets strength from metallurgy, not cold work, so it keeps its ductility and weldability. Practical advantages: better bendability (tighter stirrups without cracking), weldability (low carbon equivalent), superior fatigue and seismic performance, and better corrosion resistance than twisted bar.

Grades, sizes and how to specify

Specify three things: grade (B500B, Grade 60/75, or a local equivalent), diameter (Ø8–40 mm is the working range), and standard/certification (EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate tied to the heat number). Ductility class matters for seismic zones — class C (B500C) caps the yield ratio for energy dissipation.

TMT is the manufacturing process; B500B is the grade specification. Most B500B today is produced by the TMT route — so a bar can be both.
